One Thought Over Another

Updated: Jan 27

It is estimated that our mind thinks at least 2,000 thoughts an hour throughout our lives.

Every day, the world mirrors our state of mind. Events unfold that stimulate neural pathways in our brain, triggering patterns of thought and emotional responses. Modern neuroscience shows us that where we place our focus determines which neural circuits are activated and strengthened, shaping our perception of reality. This echoes ancient wisdom: as the Buddha observed, "The mind is everything. What you think, you become."

We have the profound ability to think ourselves into stress and frustration or hope and possibility. The good news, confirmed by neuroscience and timeless teachings, is that our initial reactions do not bind us. Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to rewire itself, means we are free to change our mental patterns and create new pathways whenever we choose. The key is to be conscious of our mental programming.

When we shift our thinking, the world shifts with us. Ancient sages understood this interconnectedness, teaching that the outer world is a reflection of our inner world. Neuroscience now provides a biological explanation: our thoughts influence not only our emotions but also the way we interpret and interact with the environment around us.

In every event, encounter, or situation, cultivate the habit of pausing and asking yourself, “What is the highest thought here?” Your thoughts are powerful. Put their power on your side.
